The Majanga Epic – Tororo Rock Hike

The Trail

Rising dramatically from the plains of Eastern Uganda, Tororo Rock is one of the country’s most iconic standalone peaks. Though modest in elevation at an elavation gain of 206 m, this rocky outcrop packs intensity into every step. The trail to the summit is steep and direct, winding past cliff faces, metal ladders, and breathtaking drops. The 1-hour ascent challenges your legs and tests your head for heights but rewards you with 360° views of Tororo town, Mt. Elgon, and even into Kenya’s Busia hills.

The Experience

Dubbed “The Majanga Epic”, this hike is all about controlled chaos. The steep climb, dramatic scenery, iron ladders, and sweeping views come together to create a bold, unforgettable adventure. But it’s not just about the trail, you’ll also get a cultural deep-dive into the Japhadola people, the guardians of this region. From pre-hike briefings rich in local history to post-hike explorations of Uganda’s oldest railway town, this day offers a beautiful mix of physical challenge, cultural discovery, and good trail banter.

Packing List

It’s a day hike but it’s demanding. Come prepared.

• Quick-dry, sweat-wicking hiking clothes

• Comfortable walking shoes (trail runners, running shoes, or boots)

• A light rain jacket

• Water bottle or water bladder (no single-use plastic bottles allowed)

• Sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

• Snacks (trail mix, energy bars, fruit)

• A little cash for lunch and extras along the way

Itinerary

6:00 AM – Meetup at Lugogo Mall (bypass gate side)

6:30 AM – Departure for Tororo. Coffee/snack stop in Jinja at Shell Java House

11:00 AM – Arrival at Tororo Rock base. Briefing and cultural introduction from local guide

11:30 AM – Start of the guided hike up Tororo Rock

1:00 PM – Descent and transfer to Tororo town for lunch and exploration of the old railway district

2:00 PM – Depart for Kampala

6:30 PM – Estimated arrival to Kampala (traffic-dependent)
