Ssezibwa Falls Hike: A Hidden 7KM Forest & Tea Plantation Trail
Ssezibwa Falls is one of Uganda’s most iconic natural sites, but very few people know there is a 7km hiking trail that goes far beyond the waterfall viewpoints. This hike takes you deep into forest cover, across rocky single tracks, through bamboo corridors, and out into expansive tea plantations with views stretching over Lugazi Sugar Works and Namataba town.
It’s a less-hiked trail, making it perfect for those looking for something quiet, scenic, and adventurous. All within easy reach of Kampala.

The trail starts right at the waterfall, climbing steeply into the forest. From there, hikers navigate through thick bushes and rocky single-track paths before entering a cool, quiet bamboo forest.
As the trail opens up, you’re rewarded with wide views of the tea plantations, with Lugazi Sugar plantations and Namataba town visible in the distance. The final section follows the Ssezibwa River, gently guiding hikers back to the falls.
The Hiking Experience
This hike is all about contrast.
You move from the roar of the waterfall to total forest silence, from narrow jungle paths to wide open tea estates. The river section near the end is calm and refreshing, making it the perfect place to slow down before finishing the hike.
At the falls, we take time to rest, have lunch, and swim in the river, making the hike feel complete and rewarding.
It’s a social, scenic, and grounding experience, one of those hikes where time moves slowly in the best way.
