Hiking Mt. Kadam

Hiking Mt. Kadam: A 3-Day Expedition to the Summit of Nachipai

Deep in Uganda’s remote eastern frontier, Mt. Kadam rises dramatically above the Karamoja plains. At 3,063 meters above sea level, its peak—Nachipai—stands as the second-highest in the Karamoja region. Unlike more popular mountains, Kadam remains largely unexplored, offering hikers a rare opportunity to trek off the beaten path, challenge their limits, and connect with nature in its rawest form.

The Trail

The hike begins in Kawara Village (approx. 1,200m elevation), nestled at the southwestern foot of Mt. Kadam in Nakapiripirit District. From there, the trail winds upward through traditional farmland, dense montane forests, and rocky ridgelines. The total elevation gain is approximately 1,860 meters, making this a physically demanding but highly rewarding adventure.

The trail is guided by local Tepeth guides—descendants of the mountain’s indigenous inhabitants—who know every turn, stream, and campsite along the route. Due to its remote nature, the trail remains unmarked and wild, making the presence of an experienced guide essential.

The final push to the summit at Nachipai Peak (3,063m) involves scrambling across rocky terrain and navigating thick brush, but the 360-degree views over the Karamoja plains, Mount Moroto to the north, and even into Kenya, make the challenge well worth it.

The Experience

Mt. Kadam offers an immersive, unplugged hiking experience. This isn’t just a trek—it’s a step into a quieter world where nature rules. You’ll camp on a remote ridge beneath the stars, hear hyrax calls echo through the night, and share fireside meals in a wilderness untouched by tourism.

The campsite is typically established around 2,400 meters, in a forest clearing near a mountain spring. It offers shelter, a reliable water source, and stunning sunset views.

Because of its remoteness, this hike is best suited for physically fit hikers with previous trekking experience.
